Group Chief Executive, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc

Sir Fred Goodwin.Sir Fred Goodwin has been Group Chief Executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc since March 2000, previously he was Deputy Group Chief Executive. Prior to this he had been Chief Executive of Clydesdale Bank PLC and Chief Executive of Yorkshire Bank PLC and previous to that he was a Partner in Touche Ross, Chief Operating Officer of the worldwide liquidation of BCCI. From 1985 to 1987 he led a team of management consultants implementing the change to contractor management at Rosyth Royal Dockyard, and was subsequently retained to advise the incoming contractor. In 1990, he was appointed by HM Government to act as an executive director of the largest industrial employer in Northern Ireland, Short Brothers PLC in the lead up to its privatisation. His previous experience has extended across a broad range of industry sectors, but has included a particular bias towards banking and financial services. He has Chaired various Government task forces including examining the work of credit unions and the New Deal programme. In June 2003 he became Chairman of The Prince’s Trust, having previously been Chairman of The Prince’s Trust – Scotland. He is a former president of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland.

The Lord Browne of Madingley, FREng

Group Chief Executive, BP plc

The Lord Browne of Madingley. Born in 1948, he joined BP in 1966 as a university apprentice. He holds a degree in Physics from Cambridge University and an MS in Business from Stanford University, California. He has also been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Heriot Watt University (D.Eng) and Robert Gordon University (D.Tech), Dundee University (LLD), Warwick University (D.Sc), Hull University (D.Sc), Cranfield University (D.Sc), Sheffield Hallam University (Hon. Duniv), University of Buckingham (D.Sc), Leuven University, Belgium (D.Sc), Thunderbird (LLD), University of Notre Dame (LLD), Colorado School of Mines (D.Eng), D Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. He is an Honorary Fellow of St John’s College, Cambridge and a Senior Member of St Antony’s College, Oxford. He is a Fellow and Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Institute of Petroleum, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Companion of the Institute of Management, an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers, an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society, an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Between 1969 and 1983, he held a variety of exploration and production posts in Anchorage, New York, San Francisco, London and Canada.

In 1984 he became Group Treasurer and Chief Executive of BP Finance International.

In April 1986, he took up the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Standard Oil Company in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1987, following the BP/Standard merger, in addition to his position as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of BP America, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Standard Oil Production Company.

In 1989, he became Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BP Exploration based in London. In September 1991, he joined the Board of The British Petroleum Company p.l.c. as a Managing Director. He was appointed Group Chief Executive on June 10, 1995. Following the merger of BP and Amoco, he became Group Chief Executive of BP Amoco on December 31, 1998.

He is a non-executive director of the Intel Corporation and Goldman Sachs. He was a trustee of The British Museum from 1995-2005, a member of the Supervisory Board of DaimlerChrysler AG from 1998 – 2001 and a non-executive director of SmithKline Beecham from 1996-1999.

He is Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, Chairman of the Cambridge Judge Business School and Emeritus Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a Trustee of the Cambridge University Foundation, and a member of the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors. He is a member (and former Chairman) of the British American Business Inc. He is a member of the board of Catalyst; he is an honorary Trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, an honorary counsellor of the Conference Board, Inc. and a Vice President of the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum.

In 1999, the Royal Academy of Engineering awarded him the Prince Philip Medal for his outstanding contribution to the field of Engineering. The Stanford Business School Alumni Association presented him with the Ernest C Arbuckle Award in 2001, in recognition of excellence in the field of management leadership. Other awards include the Henry Shaw Medal of the Missouri Botanical Gardens, the Gold Medal of the Institute of Management, the Institute of Energy Melchett Medal (2001), the Society of Petroleum Engineers Public Service Award (2002), the Institution of Chemical Engineers Commemorative Medal (2003),the inaugural Channing Corporate Citizenship Award from British American Business Inc. (2004), the World Petroleum Congress Dewhurst Award (2005) and the Dwight D Eisenhower Global Leadership Award from the Business Council for International Understanding (2005).

He was voted Most Admired CEO by Management Today from 1999 – 2002.

He was knighted in 1998 and made a life peer in 2001.

Malcolm Wicks

UK Energy Minister

Malcolm Wicks.Malcolm Wicks is Minister of State for Energy at the Department of Trade and Industry. Previously he was Minister of State for Pensions (June 2003 - May 2005) and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Work (June 2001 - June 2003) at the Department for Work and Pensions and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Lifelong Learning at the Department for Education and Employment (appointed July 1999). Mr Wicks was the Chairman of the Education Select Committee from 1998 until his appointment as a Minister. He has been Member of Parliament for Croydon North since 1992.

Mr Wicks was educated at North West London Polytechnic and the London School of Economics. Between 1974 and 1977, he was a university lecturer and from 1968 to 1974 a social policy analyst at the Home Office. He was Director of the Family Policy Studies Centre before entering Parliament. His publications include 'Old & Cold: Hyperthermia and Social Policy' (1976).

Mr Wicks has been a member of the Social Security Select Committee. His Private Member's Bill, now the Carers' (Recognition and Services Act), came into force in April 1996. From 1995 Mr Wicks was the Opposition spokesperson on social security. He was formerly a school governor. Mr Wicks is married with three children. His recreations are music, walking and gardening.

Matt Brister

Chief Executive Officer, Silverstone Energy Ltd

Matt is the CEO of Silverstone Energy Ltd., a new entrant to the UKCS that was formed by private equity firm Lime Rock Partners and Canadian privately held E&P company, Storm Ventures Inc.

Matt's past experience has been focused largely on founding, building and monetising Junior exploration and production companies in Western Canada. Previous successes include Pinnacle Resources which grew from start-up to a company producing greater than 40,000 boe a day before being sold to Renaissance Energy in 1998 and Storm Energy Inc. which grew to 12,000 boe a day before being converted to Focus Energy Trust in 2004.

Matt is a Geology graduate from the University of Calgary (1981), a member of APEGGA and currently resides in Calgary. He is the Chairman of the Board of Toronto Stock Exchange listed Storm Exploration Ltd, and a director of Focus Energy Trust and several private energy companies.

Simon Munro

Principal, Lime Rock Partners

Simon is a Principal of Lime Rock Partners, a US headquartered private equity fund that invests solely in the oil & gas industry.

His career started in 1992 with Rutherford Manson Dowds, a Scottish Chartered Accountancy firm which specialised in corporate finance work, particularly around the oilfield service sector. He joined Simmons & Company, the boutique energy investment bank in 1999 when its Aberdeen office was established then in 2001 moved on to JPMorgan, working out of the company’s Hong Kong office as a member of the investment bank’s oil & gas industry team covering the Asia Pacific region.

Simon joined Lime Rock partners in August 2002 and established the firm's office in Aberdeen together with Lawrence Ross who previously headed up 3i's oil and gas team. Simon has been involved in the origination and monitoring of numerous Lime Rock investments over the last three years including Acteon Group, PSL Energy Services, Caledus, RXT, Serimer, VTech and Silverstone Energy and he sits on the Boards of Caledus, Serimer and Silverstone where he acts as the CFO of the company.

Dr Andrew McLaughlin

Group Chief Economist, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group

Dr Andrew McLaughlin.Dr Andrew McLaughlin became Group Chief Economist at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group on 1st January 2005. Andrew was Deputy Chief Economist for three years prior to his appointment. Before joining the Bank, he spent three years in corporate finance advisory work with Ernst and Young.

Andrew holds a first class honors degree in Economics and Politics. His 1993 doctoral thesis won the prestigious Walter Bagehot prize for best UK dissertation. Andrew spent several years working in academia before beginning his commercial career. He published a book on the automobile industry in 1998.

Andrew is a regular commentator in UK print and broadcast media and also a columnist in China Daily, China’s leading business newspaper. He has undertaken a number of public-service engagements during his career.

Mike Wagstaff

CEO, Venture

Mike Wagstaff.Mike Wagstaff, a former Managing Director for Schroders plc, brings years of senior level oil and gas industry experience to Venture, including more than 10 years advising some of the world's largest oil companies.

As a Managing Director at Schroders, Mike advised companies such as British Gas, Shell, BP, LASMO, Conoco and Unocal. In addition, he took public a number of oilfield service companies, including Numar and Paradigm Geophysical. Mike, who began his career as a petroleum engineer with Shell, brings a unique mix of skills to his role as CEO of Venture. He combines years of financial expertise with hands-on experience of the technical side of the industry and a deep understanding of the business opportunity that Venture has been designed to capitalise on.

Mike Salter

Chief Operating Officer, Abbot Group plc

Mike Salter. Mike graduated originally as a Mechanical Engineer, however his focus has developed as he saw the opportunities and challenges presented by the vibrant and growing drilling industry. His impressive career has seen him take on senior roles in a number of internationally successful companies, including Vice President, Europe for Bawden Drilling, Chief Executive of Smedvig, and his current position as Chief Operating Officer for Abbot Group plc.

He also plays an active role in the industry scene, taking on the task of persuading the government to provide more support for the oil and gas industry, through his work on the PILOT Industry Leadership Team. With an eye to the future Mike’s particular focus is on skills, and he is proud to have been one of the team responsible for developing the current Technician Training scheme for the upstream oil and gas industry.

Dr Tony Cocker

Managing Director, E.ON UK plc

Dr Tony Cocker.Board Member E.ON UK and Managing Director, Energy Wholesale. E.ON UK is a leading energy and gas utility in the UK with strong positions in Retail, Distribution, Trading and Generation; and is one of the five market units of E.ON AG.

Energy Wholesale comprises the generation and trading activities of E.ON UK which includes: 9 GW conventional power stations; renewable power stations; technical and operations consultancy; trading teams supplying gas and coal to power stations, gas and electricity to the retail business, trading power, gas, coal, oil, renewable obligation certificates and carbon to hedge the commodity risks of E.ON UK. It is the leading trader of carbon certificates within the E.ON Group; and is active in the JI / CDM market.

Tony is Married with two young children.

Jim Atack

Managing Director, Petrofac Facilities Management, worldwide

Jim Atack.Jim Atack joined the Petrofac organisation as Operations and Change Manager for the innovative Oryx takeover of Hutton, Murchison and Lyell oilfields in 1994, and was then the architect of similar rejuvenation work in the Ninian Field takeover from Chevron in 1996.

More recently he was engaged in the successful re-habilitation of the Ramform Banff FPSO, and establishing Petrofac as a fully fledged Facilities Management company.

Jim's prior experience spans some seventeen years of Oil and Gas Field production and development projects with BP in the North Sea, Onshore UK, and Alaska.

He holds degrees in Civil Engineering (Loughborough University of Technology) and Offshore Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

Carl Huhges

Partner, Deloitte

Carl Huhges.Carl Hughes leads the Energy, Infrastructure and Utilities practice of Deloitte in the UK. He originally joined Arthur Andersen in 1983 after graduating from St Peter's College, Oxford with an MA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He became a partner in 1993 and joined Deloitte in 2002.

Carl works primarily with clients in the energy industry. He has over 20 years’ experience of the upstream, downstream, services and energy trading sectors, focusing principally on the provision of audit, due diligence, transaction support and advisory services.

Carl has worked extensively across the oil & gas industry with the Majors, the NOC’s and the Independents in the UK and internationally. His clients have included BP and Total; NOC’s in Kuwait, Libya, Hungary and Croatia; and UK independents including Tullow, Premier, Burren, SOCO, Sterling and Intrepid.

Carl has been closely involved in providing transaction support services on many takeovers, mergers and public transactions in the oil and gas and mining sectors including, most recently, the IPO of Vedanta Resources plc.

Carl is a regular speaker on oil and gas industry and accounting matters and has worked closely with the Oil and Gas Industry Accounting Committee in the UK. He is a member of the Energy Institute in the UK.

Simon Toole

Director, Licensing, Exploration And Development (Lcu-Led) Department Of Trade And Industry

Simon Toole.Simon Toole is currently Director Exploration, Licensing and Development in the Energy Group at the Department of Trade and Industry. In this role he is responsible for licensing policy, exploration and development with the objective of ensuring that full economic value is gained from the UK’s continental shelf. He previously had responsibility for the Department’s regulation of the UK’s offshore oil and gas environmental regime and initiated the developments made to that regime in the late 1990s. Simon has been at the DTI since 1983 having worked first as a wireline engineer in the UK and Middle East. He has a first degree in Geophysical Science and an MSc in Petroleum Engineering. While at the DTI he has been seconded to Amoco (Operations) and Shell (Gas) and has worked on all aspects of the Department’s regulation of the oil and gas industry.

He is married with three children.

Tom Hickey

Chief Financial Officer, Tullow Oil plc

A Chartered Accountant, Tom Hickey was appointed Chief Financial Officer and to the Board in 2000. Prior to joining Tullow he was an Associate Director of ABN AMRO Corporate Finance (Ireland) Limited, which he joined in 1995

In this role, he advised public and private companies in a wide range of industry sectors in the areas of fund raising, stock exchange requirements, mergers and acquisitions, flotations and related transactions.

He is also non-Executive Director of Ikon Science Limited, a specialist geological software company in which Tullow has a minority equity stake.

Steve Mills

Senior Director, London Oil & Gas Team, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group

Steve Mills.Steve has over 20 years experience in both project finance lending and advisory work. He joined RBS in 2000. Steve began his career at Midland Bank, before moving to Hong Kong Bank Group where he was Head of the Oil & Gas Project Finance Department (London Branch). In 1990, he was a founder Director of Sceptre Management Limited, a corporate finance advisory company specialising in project financing for the capital-intensive industries. In 1994, Steve joined the Sumitomo Bank in London where he spent 4 years working on oil and gas and power projects, becoming Head of Oil and Gas. He joined RBS 5 years ago as a Senior Director within the London Oil & Gas Team, becoming its head in October 2003.

The North Sea, and most particularly financing for its independent oil & gas companies, has been a major part of Steve’s work over the last 15 years. Steve’s recent assignments have also included equity finance and subordinated debt facilities for independents as part of “tailored” financing packages associated with acquisitions and the development of smaller, short-life field developments.

Steve has been heavily involved in financings for the regulated gas distribution industry in the UK and Northern Ireland. During his project finance career he has also worked extensively on the financing of downstream hydrocarbon and petrochemical projects in the Middle East, in particular the major wave of liquefied natural gas projects which have come to the market over the last 10 years.

Allan Hart

Asset Leader – Mature Assets, Shell EPE

Allan Hart.Allan joined Shell Canada in May 1980 working as a drilling/production testing engineer on land projects in Western Canada and offshore Eastern Canada as part of the Sable Island offshore project in the mid-1980’s. Following a production engineering assignment in the Waterton field of western Canada, he was appointed a front supervisory role in Drilling engineering in 1987.

After a Business Planning role in support of the Vice-President Development, Allan was appointed to a series of managerial roles in Drilling, Production and Development in Shell Canada. He was appointed Operations Manager of the Waterton and Jumping Pound sour gas complexes in April 1996.

Allan then joined Shell Expro in June 2001 as General Manager of the Gas Supply Group, following which he participated in the EPE redesign as the Production workstream team leader. He was appointed to his current role as Mature Assets Leader in September 2003.

He was asked to become the team leader for the Brent Bravo fatalities’ investigation on September 11, 2003

Allan is married to Brenda and has two sons.

Malcolm Webb

Chief Executive Officer – UKOOA

Malcolm Webb.Malcolm Webb is Chief Executive of the UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). A graduate of Liverpool University, he is a qualified solicitor with an extensive knowledge of both the upstream and downstream oil industry, gained first as a lawyer and then in a series of management roles.

Malcolm began his oil industry career with Burmah Oil in 1974, and went on to hold senior positions with a number of oil companies including the British National Oil Corporation, Charterhouse Petroleum Plc and Petrofina where his posts included, Legal and Corporate Services Director, Head of Group HR and finally Managing Director of Fina Plc.

Prior to joining UKOOA in February 2004, Malcolm spent three years as Director General of the UK Petroleum Industry Association (UKPIA), which represents the UK oil refining and marketing sector.

Since joining UKOOA Malcolm has led the organisation through a major change programme designed to make UKOOA a more representative and proactive Trade Association. He divides his time mainly between London and Aberdeen where UKOOA has recently moved to new “fit for purpose” offices in the centre of town.

Malcolm Webb is a member of the Oil and Gas Industry Leadership Team (ILT) and of PILOT, the Government Industry forum which aims to secure the long-term future of the UK upstream oil and gas industry. He is also chairman of Cogent SSL, (the commercial arm of the Sector Skills Council for the oil and gas industry), chairman of Common Data Access Limited, a director of the Offshore Training Foundation and a trustee of the Aberdeen Oil Industry Chaplaincy Trust.
